Yorkshire in Bloom is a competition that is run by the Royal Horticultural Society, to encourage environmental awareness by all sort of organisations. The Middleton Railway was encouraged to enter it for the first time in 2018, and is delighted to have won a Gold Award in the category for Tourist Attractions.

This is despite the setback caused by the fire at a neighbouring builder's merchants, only two days before the competition was due to be judged. This had been fierce enough to melt the front of one of the waste bins on our platform, so it is not surprising that the flowers on the platform had also suffered from the heat. But the judges delayed their visit to judge us by a week, which gave our gardening team time to recover the situation. The judges comment on the recovery was "Full credit to this dedicated and committed team for the hard word they put in.".

Apart from this the judges were particularly impressed by how clean and tidy the whole of the site was, and by the floral displays on the platform, which they said "Gave a WOW! Factor". They also commended the work that has been done along the length of the line, which demonstrates the railway's strong environmental strategy.
