Our initial programme of special events is shown on the calendar of train services for 2017, and details of each of these events are given below.

In addition, other events may well be organised during the year in conjunction with our ordinary train operations, such as heritage diesel services.  Watch out for details of these extra events, which will be added to this page as the dates for them are fixed.

If you are not sure who or what "Steam Punks" are, then visit the website of the Leeds Steampunk Market, with whom we are collaborating to arrange this event.  The link to their site will open in a new browser window or tab.

The event will feature a variety of market stalls with arts, crafts and costumes, hot and cold food, birds of prey, charity tombola and "Coffee Jousting" displays.

Our usual steam trains will be running, and also you could have have a go at driving one of our engines, under careful instruction.

Our usual timetable will apply.  A separate page gives more details of this event..

Transport Walk

Sunday 16th July 2017

A tram in Middleton Woods

A guided walk round some of the old transport routes through Middleton Park

The walk will link with the 12.20 train from Moor Road, and there will be time for a tea break before setting off from the Park Visitor Centre at 13.30.  The aim is to be back at Park Halt for the 14.55 train back to Moor Road, or possibly the next train if the walk takes longer than planned.  The walk will include:

  • 1750s coal wagonways, which were used to move wagons downhill by gravity and return the empty wagons by horse;
  • the electric tramway, initially constructed to get building materials to the new housing between the wars;  and
  • a section of the Great Northern Railway route that skirted round south Leeds.

Our usual timetable and fares will apply.

Heritage Open Days

Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th September 2017

 Salamanca on a goods train

Come and find out more about our industrial heritage

As our contribution to the nation-wide "Heritage Open Days" event, we will be offering tours of this historic site, on the railway where the world’s very first successful, load-hauling steam locomotive ran in the year of 1812.

The tours will run hourly from 10.00 to 3.00 p.m. on both days, and there is no need to book for them.  They will take visitors through our history from the working of the coal outcrops in Middleton Woods in mediaeval times, via the country’s first wooden (horse-drawn) railway in the eighteenth century and the revolutionary steam loco “Salamanca” - arguably, Leeds’ premier contribution to the Industrial Revolution - to the present situation as the country‘s first standard-gauge preserved railway.  After that, visitors will be welcome to buy a ticket and ride on our trains!

Our usual timetable and fares will apply.  There is no charge for the tours.

September Steam Spectacular

Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th September 2017

Brookes No. 1 at Park Halt

A variety of locomotives in action

This gala event replaces the "Main Line to Industry" event that we had been planning.  It will focus on our steam locomotive fleet, and particularly Brookes No. 1.  This has recently returned to service following its long overhaul (which was financed by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, to whom we are very grateful).  The event will cover the whole line, and in particular the Balm Road branch.

On each day a special intensive service will operate, and special fares will apply.

A separate page gives more details of this event.
