Events 2016

Our initial programme of special events is shown on the calendar of train services for 2016, and details of each of these events are given below.

In addition, other events will be organised during the year in conjunction with our ordinary train operations, such as heritage diesel services or "Kids 4 A Quid" days.  Watch out for details of these extra events, which will be added to this page as the dates for them are fixed.

Easter Bank Holiday (Space Weekend)

Saturday 26th, Sunday 27th and Monday 28th March 2016

For fare-paying children travelling on the train services, we will be giving away free chocolate.

Our usual timetable and fares will apply on all three days.

Saturday 26th, Sunday 27th, Monday 28th and Wednesday 30th March 2016

Also the extended Easter Bank Holiday weekend has a special Space theme, with an exhibition of Moon Dust and Meteorites.  This has been arranged in conjunction with Harrogate Astronomical Society, and is supported by NASA.  Admission to this special exhibition is separate from the train rides, and is free.

Our usual timetable and fares will apply on all four days: note that on Wednesday the last train will depart from Moor Road at 15:20, not 16:00.

Mining Tales and Trails

Sunday 17th April 2016

Guided walks, and tales of Middleton's coal mining heritage. The event will feature a mixed train, with goods wagons as well as passenger coaches.

Our usual timetable and fares will apply.  A separate page gives more details of this event.

A Walk in the Woods

Saturday 30th April, Sunday 1st and Monday 2nd May 2016

Some trains will be met at Middleton Park for a walk round the Bluebell displays.  Each walk will give you a chance to explore the woods and see the Bluebells with an experienced local guide.

Each walk will be tailored on the day to take in the best bluebells and will be suitable for those taking part: pushchairs are welcome. The walks are fairly short - around 30 minutes - and will also go to the lakeside visitor centre, where refreshments are available.

As part of this event we will be supporting the work of the West Yorkshire Retired Greyhound Trust.  On each day they will have a stand at our Moor Road site, with at least a couple of greyhounds helping (?).

Also, the author Joe Coates will be making a return visit, telling stories in the Engine House.

Our normal timetable will apply.

Children are invited to bring their teddy bear to join in the walk, and as a special offer those under 16 who do will travel free, provided that they are accompanied by a fare-paying adult.  There will be a special adult fare of £6, but family tickets will not be available for this event.

As part of this event we will be offering "driver for a fiver" experiences, which give you the chance to have a go at driving one of our diesel locomotives.  The charges for these will be in support of the West Yorkshire Retired Greyhound Trust.

A separate page gives more details of this event, including the special offer for children, which trains will be met by the tour guides for the walks, and information about the author Joe Coates and his books based on the North Bay Railway in Scarborough, about the West Yorkshire Retired Greyhound Trust and about the "driver for a fiver" experiences.

Kite Festival

Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd May 2016

This festival of kite flying is organised by the Friends of Middleton Park in conjunction with the Northern Kite Group.  It will take place on The Clearings, which is an area of the park that is closer to our Park Halt than to the park Visitor Centre - so a ride in our train will be the ideal way to get to the festival.

Our usual timetable and fares will apply.

Steam Punks under Pressure

Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd July 2016

If you are not sure who or what "Steam Punks" are, then visit the website of the Leeds Steampunk Market, with whom we are collaborating to arrange this event.  The link to their site will open in a new browser window or tab.

The event will feature a variety of market stalls with arts, crafts and costumes, hot and cold food, birds of prey, charity tombola and "Coffee Jousting" displays.

As well as our usual steam train service, we will be operating our "Driver for a Fiver" service. This will give anyone (provided they are within the age limits that we have to set) the opportunity to have a go at driving one of our steam engines, under careful instruction.

Our usual timetable will apply.  A separate page gives more details of this event.

On each day a special intensive service will operate, and special fares will apply. There will also be some special train services on Friday 15th July.

Antiques Road Trip Broadcast

Thursday 29th September 2016

The episode of the television programme "Antiques Road Trip" that was broadcast on BBC1 at 4.30pm featured one of the presenters, Claire Rawle, visiting the railway.  This episode can now be viewed on BBC iPlayer, by clicking on this link.  Note that, before you can view the programme, you will be asked to confirm that you have a television licence.

Matthew Murray

Our locomotive Matthew Murray, as featured in the programme (although this picture was taken in better weather than the BBC had for filming, back in April of this year!)

If you just want to watch the part of the programme that covers the railway, then you will need to use the iPlayer controls to start watching at about 22 minutes and 10 seconds into the programme.  This part of the programme lasts for about 4 and a half minutes.

The episode will be available up until 29th October, because broadcast programmes are only available via iPlayer for 30 days from the date of transmission.
